Pet Safety at Christmas

December 4, 2017 | by kate.allen@hooknortonvets.co.uk | Pets

Whilst it is the season to be jolly, it is important to remember pet safety. This time of year is not without risks to our beloved pets and here are our top tips to make sure our animals stay safe & healthy.

Quite a few delicious Christmas food items are toxic to cats and dogs. These include:

  • Chocolate – dark chocolate contains a higher % of theobromine, and is therefore more toxic, but ALL chocolate is poisonous to dogs.
  • Grapes & Raisins – these can cause acute kidney failure. Remember, many seasonal foods contain these, including mince pies, Christmas pudding & panettone.
  • Onions & Garlic – causes anaemia.
  • Bones – cooked meat bones become brittle and fragments can break off when eaten. This can cause choking or blockages in the gastrointestinal tract.

Many ornamental plants and holly are toxic if ingested. Keep a particular eye on cats!

Christmas Tree Decorations:

  • Baubles – can cause blockages if ingested.
  • Tinsel – can cause choking if the animal gets wrapped up in it.
  • Lights – can become very hot and burn paws.
  • Glass Ornaments/Decorations – can shatter easily.

Christmas Presents – make sure anything put under the tree is pet friendly. Animals have much better noses than we do and can sniff out food very quickly!

One last thing, if it turns cold, remember that anti-freeze is extremely toxic to cats.

Should something go wrong, help is at hand. Hook Norton Veterinary Group provide an emergency service throughout the festive period, so if you have any concerns about the health of your pet, do not hesitate to call us on 01608 730501.
