We regularly require dog blood donors here at the surgery. Earlier this month, Viper a lovely flat coat retriever underwent surgery to remove his bleeding spleen. Due to the amount of blood that he lost during the surgery he needed an urgent blood transfusion. Luckily for Viper, we were able to source a unit of blood from the Pet Blood Bank to give Viper a transfusion which helped to save his life.
The Pet Blood Bank is a UK based charity that provides a national canine blood bank. They collect blood from donor dogs across the UK to provide this amazing service.
Here at Hook Norton Veterinary Group, we are in desperate need of some of our own dog blood donors.
In order for us to be able to use your dog as a blood donor we must firstly determine their blood type. We do this by taking a small blood sample and testing it in our in-house laboratory. All being well we then add your dog to our blood donor list, and in emergencies like Viper’s, your dog could save another dog’s life!
Unfortunately these emergencies do not always happen in the day time. We therefore may call you out of hours to see if your dog could help. A payment is credited to your dog’s account every time they donate blood to a patient in need as a big THANK YOU!
Blood donation is an amazing process, your dog could save the life of someone else’s much loved pet. We are very happy that a blood transfusion helped to save Viper’s life and he is now at home enjoying life with his owners again.
If you are interested in your dog becoming a donor and they fit the criteria above, then please contact us at our Hook Norton, Charlbury or Deddington small animal surgeries so we can book them in for a FREE health check and blood typing with one of our vets.
